Existing Types of Prebiotic Soluble Fiber

Dietary Fibre is a carbohydrate which is neither digested nor hydrolyzed in the small intestine. This facilitates the fibre to reach the colon in an undigested form, letting fermentation to happen by the bacteria. The dietary fibre reaching the colon increases the biomass as a result of which frequency and amount of facal increases. This promotes promptness and alleviating constipation. Here, the concept of prebiotics fit perfectly.

Prebiotics also oppose digestion in the small intestine and are fermented in the large intestine that contains reduced energy in the form of calories than sucrose and starch. Moreover, prebiotics also increases the stool weight and frequency. Prebiotics fibres are actually non-digestible food component that enhances human health through discerning fermentation by several different useful bacteria.

We classify these dietary fibres in:

1. Soluble: These fibres are fermented, but not in a discerning manner. So it can be said that all soluble fibres are not truly prebiotic.

2. Non-soluble fibres: These are not completely fermented by bacteria and some of them are fermented outside the colon. So, the statement is applicable to these fibres that all of them are not truly prebiotic.

The research shows that the types of Prebiotic Soluble Fiber :

1. Inulin

2. FOS (Oligofructose)

3. GOS (galacto-oligosaccharide)

These are found naturally and one can even get them artificially through several industrial products. Experts believe that these prebiotics based products have several benefits as these are used to cure several colon diseases which was earlier impossible to cure. Industrial prebiotic products are highly beneficial.
